Where does the term OK come from?

A lot of people use the term "OK" everyday with out realizing but what does it stand for and where does it come from. People are trying to find out if it used to an abbreviation that was used years ago and meant something else, or it is just a popular slang word. Nobody can seem to find out it's origin though?
